The introduction of historically black colleges and universities stood as the beginning of a revolution for the African American community and in consequence, black societies around the world. The HBCUs brought about strength in unity and growth amongst the black American community who were deprived of freedom and the right to learn and to be educated. The school was a foundation for the minority at that time to rise up and take a stand, offering an opportunity to upgrade themselves to Masters by acquiring knowledge and attaining a higher education degree.

Historical Black Colleges and Universities are established universities and educational schools which were founded before 1964, in times when discrimination against black students getting admitted into the universities was prominent, and racism prevailed most. These universities began with the aim of giving black youths a chance to learn in a system that was unfavorable and unfair towards their kind. These colleges were a revolution, and the District of Columbia, Washington was not left out.

Howard University

HU prides itself guarding over 9000 undergraduates, graduates and professionals students from diverse states and nation's around the world. Its large diversity creates an environment for representation and relations between states, countries, and continents. Howard doesn't only educate, and it's community promotes peace and interaction between race and nationality spread around the world. Howard stands as a Tier 1 University, ranked 89 in the US, according to U.S. &World News. The school is the only HBCU ranked amongst the top 40 according to the Bloomberg Businessweek college rank.

Howard breaks the status quo and produces students who take the reigns in coming out top in any field. The foundation development of Howard began after the American civil war, as a theological seminary for African-American clearly men. This later developed into a university which stood five years after it's establishment as a full university to accommodating and educating over 100,000 freed slaves.

Now, since its inception in March 2, 1867, HU has over 10 colleges under it, including; College of Engineering and Architecture, College of Nursing & Allied Health Sciences, College of Pharmacy, Howard University College of Arts and Sciences, Howard University College of Dentistry, Howard University School of Business, Howard University School of Communications, Howard University College of Medicine, Howard University School of Law, Middle School of Mathematics and Science, School of Divinity, School of Education and School of Social Work. These contain faculties divided into departments offering over 100 courses, including honors and research programs.

The majority of the Howard population, up to 80% are black students, and up to 4% of the student population are international students. This is an indication Howard stands by it's service to the African and African American community in its truth, following its motto "Veritas et Utilitas."

University of District Columbia

The University of District Columbia stands as the only public HBCU school present in the state of DC. Founded in 1851, just a year before Howard University, the university's motto has ever been to "Acquire, Accomplish and Take Over the World." The school began as an evolutionary pacesetter for colored girls overcoming the racist and sexist views of black women. Today, the public school has become a hub harboring over 4000 students, enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs. Under the university are various colleges which includes College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability & Environmental Sciences, College of Arts & Sciences (CAS), School of Business & Public Administration (SBPA), School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), David A. Clarke School of Law, Research and Graduate Studies and University of the District of Columbia Community College. In accordance to conquering the world and promoting its onset goal, UDC opened a branch of its school in Egypt, Africa.

In partnership with Modern Academy, Maadi, south of Cairo, UDC can offer a few courses in Africa, upgrading the educational system and creating opportunities for international students which are unable to afford travel and accommodation expenses in the US.
