Historical Black Colleges and Universities are a foundational bedrock of the African or African-American or black society and community. It is quite phenomenal that these colleges exist in the first place. Although it might be controversially racist to bring the separation of the black community from the white in the educational system. However, the story behind the presence of HBCUs is a victory every grandma will love to share. Unlike commonly proposed, HBCUs are not universities with a majority of black students. They are universities established before 1964. After the American civil war which gave freedom from slavery to the black man, there still remained a stigma, which still exists today, in the nation. The "colored" were not easily allowed to school or get accepted into universities and colleges. Learned tutors, taught children in churches and built the minds of these community up to a point whereby it was possible to establish black universities and colleges which facilitated the learning of young African or African-American or black youths.

Charles R. Drew is a private, non-profit historically black university, which is also a minority-serving institution. The historic citadel of learning is located in Willowbrook, Los Angeles County, Califonia. The institution was founded as a result of a response to the inadequate medical facilities within Watts region of Los Angeles, Califonia in 1966. The medical institution later became a university and was named in honor of Dr. Charles R. Drew.

The only known historical black colleges and universities in the city of California is Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. This college stands as the only one, located in Los Angeles today. It is commonly referred to as King Drew University and is named in honor of Dr. Charles R. Drew an associate of Martin Luther King. The establishment of this institution in 1966 was to change the state of inadequate medical facilities around the region in which it is located and was later changed to a University. The university is private and non-profit, giving a chance to young black applicants to learn and develop themselves in the medical field and compete with their Caucasian counterparts accordingly. The strength of Charles R. Drew University lies in their motto to stand as a private university with a public mission.

CDU offers a professional and student-friendly environment with its diverse population consisting of students from all facets of life. The college stands as one college with a quite small class population which gives students a personal relationship with professors and facilitates the learning process on a tertiary institutional level. The advantages of joining the CDU community is the historical background and black evolution the presence of such an institution is built on. Centered in Los Angeles, students have access to the city and life in school poses to be an educational and recreational ride.

Although Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, is considered the only HBCU in California, there still remains a few black colleges ranked as top universities in America offering great programs in a well-balanced community.

There are quite over a hundred of these HBCUs around America. California with one joins in the states promoting black excellence and curbing of racism, especially on an institutional level. Enrolling students to join these communities of historically Black universities and colleges especially the young millennials, gives them a realistic view of the privileges and victory the civil rights movement achieved.
