According to the Higher Education Act from 1965, a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) is defined as any university or college that was founded before 1964 with the mission of educating black Americans.
Today, there are countless HBCUs throughout the United States. Here are the top 15 in the country.
1. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee, Florida
This college, which is often abbreviated as FAMU was originally called the State Normal College for Colored Students when initially founded in 1887. At this time, the college served 15 students and only employed two instructors.
