1

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*

N/A

2

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*

Mathematics Education. I always loved helping people. I did not realize that I had a true gift for math until college. I changed my major to education. From what I can not remember.

3

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*

FAMU taught me to be the best at whatever I do. Be the best teacher, the best engineer, the best business owner. Mediocrity is not acceptable. 110% was required of everything we did and as an Alumnus, I consistently remember my experiences and the voices of my mentors, coaches and professors on “You are the best at what you do. No other can do it but you.”

4

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*

N/A

5

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*

The one name that pops into my mind is Dr. William Brodie. He was one of my professors. I have a degree in Mathematics Education and the fact that a black man could teach math like that was awe-inspiring. I did not even know I loved math that much until I got to FAMU. Colonel Bernard Hendricks, Director of the Student Union and Activities – I can not put into words what gave to every student who came into contact with him. He was a man of honor and you became that in his presence. After my graduation, he surprised me and held a party at his home in my honor. I was shocked and surprised because I could not believe it and did not understand what I had done to deserve it. He told me that I was bright, brilliant and special. That there were very few people who could do what I had done in my college career. I served in SGA for 3 years in that time was placed in charge of transportation to all away games for the entire student body. I never knew the magnitude of this until much later.
