Umaja Savoy, Southern University- c/o 1997, Public Policy and Administration

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
Eunice, Louisiana and my cousin.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I really wanted to reconnect and be around my people after I was honorably discharged from the military.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
My experience was one of the best periods in my life. It was a feeling of being amongst family. Everyone in my department helped everyone and it was a group effort. You never felt all alone someone was always there to help and cheer you on.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My first time experiences were the football games and half time. They were amazing seeing the band on the field and performing each football game. Also the tailgating before the games was like a great big family reunion. We had the best times.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Dr. Tarver was one of my favourites because he was always so encouraging and Dr. Igegeri.
Dr. Igegeri always was there to help no matter what the issue was.
