Tyler Jones, Savannah State University- c/o 2022, Electrical Engineering

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am from Covington, Georgia. In high school I was a part of the Marine Corps JROTC program and they introduced me to the HBCU life.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I decided on a HBCU vs. PWI because I felt it would give me the connections and outside world skills to succeed in life.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
I experienced so much at Thee Savannah State University within my first year here. It all started when I took a leap of faith to run for SGA Freshmen Class President, from there I knew I could get anywhere.
After winning that position in SGA so many doors opened up for me. I joined Freshmen Academy, Sister Project, and NAACP. At the end of the year the Delta Eta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. awarded me the 2019 Humanitarian of the Year. I felt that it was my biggest accomplishment thus far.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
It was my first time being around so many people wanting the same thing, which is to succeed in every aspect of life.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
My advisor, Dewayne Gilliard, impacted my life by just being there for me through the ups and downs of my freshman year.
