Traemel Crawford, Paine College- c/o 2016, Mass Communications/Broadcast Journalism
Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
Augusta, Georgia. I was introduced to HBCUs by Mr. Anthony Page, who instructed an acting class at Paine College, and introduced me to Paine as well.
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
In all actuality, an HBCU was never in my mind to attend.
Yet, I'm grateful that I did attend an HBCU because, it made me to be the man I am today, presented many great opportunities, where I birthed my graphic design business and learned more about African American history.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
My experience at Paine College was nothing but amazing! Paine College was never in my choice of colleges, but I'm just grateful that it was in God's plan for me to be there.
Many people truly don't understand the history, nor the understanding of why Paine College is truly the gateway to the world, unless you truly stepped foot on the campus. Paine College is where I've met so many great people, and made so many great connections as well.
Paine College is where I had the opportunity to exude my gifts, minister the word of God, and grew more spiritually by the help of friends, Reverend Luther B. Felder, and the Paine College Wesley Fellowship Organization. Paine College is where I birthed my graphic design business and my professor, Professor Waston presented the opportunity for me to design for many of our Mass Comm events.
Paine College is truly a prestigious institution because, it gave not just me an opportunity, but many other people who needed a place like Paine, to accept the challenge to be better and to excel in everything that came our way.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My first time experience is when I had stepped foot on the campus for the first time. I thought to myself, what in the world is this? Now, I look back and see that, this college has presented and offer more than the world to me lol.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Wow! The professors who have made a great impact in my life are Professor Watson, Professor Burnette, and Professor Harris.
These three individuals were over the Mass Comm Department, but were like parents to all of the Mass Comm students. For me, each of them played a vital role in my life. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have even known my potential. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have even known that, I was supposed to have my own business and carry it after my tenure in college.
If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have known so much about media, politics, the African American history and just to be prepared after I graduated from college. They pushed me and taught me so much that, I still remember every lesson, every motivational word and savored every conversation we had outside of class.
I love them so much and they were like family to me. I can't thank them all enough!
