Tissan Young, Morehouse College- c/o 2020, Film

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am from Rogers, AR. My father proposed the idea of attending Morehouse to me when I was looking at colleges.

Enjoying myself at the 2017 Spelhouse Homecoming Tailgate.
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I had grown up as one of the only black kids in my community and felt isolated from people as a result. I felt that I needed to have more of a social connection to black people in order to better myself in life.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
Morehouse was and still is the best place for me. After visiting the first time, I could not imagine being at any other institution, and it’s proven to be a great decision for me.
I have met different types of people at Morehouse that have helped make my experience here very unique. Some of the smartest and hardest people I’ve met have been at this institution as well as Spelman College.
Being around so many people like me and wanting the same thing as me has motivated me to better myself far more than I ever could have before in my life.
I’m still in the process of being molded by this institution, but I know that by the end of it, my experience will be something truly amazing.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
This December, I will be leaving the country for the first time due to a study abroad opportunity Morehouse provided.

Me enjoying my 20th birthday on campus.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Many professors here are great but one that has really stuck to me has been Dr. Alison Lifon.
She was my English professor my 1st year at Morehouse and she is still my favorite professor. The assignments and feedback she gave me prompted me to see a lot of things outside the box and to be a lot more persistent with my work ethic.
This same work ethic has been something I have carried over into other facets of my life. Along with that, she was one of the smartest professors I have had, and she made it look easy.
What sports and/or extra curricular activities did you do in High School? And why?
Football. I wanted to try something new and a little bit of peer pressure was involved. I ended up playing for five years.
Best restaurants on/near campus? Best dishes?
Ru’Sans. Can never go wrong with Fried Rice.
What is your major? and Why did you choose it?
I am a Film Major. I plan on becoming a screenwriter in the future and I figured with big names already coming out of of Morehouse, I would be provided with everything necessary to make it out in the real world.
Where are the spots to go to if you wanted to cuddle with your boy or girlfriend?
Spelman Gates, the dorms, the CAU Promenade, are just a few good places to go.
What to date has been your happiest moment @ Your HBCU?
My happiest moment was probably meeting my friends at Spelman College.
What and where are the historical places on campus?
Graves Hall is the oldest building on Morehouse’s campus and was the building I stayed in my freshman year. It’s the building at the top of the hill on our campus and is the highest point of it.
What music would you recommend to others to listen to, to find strength and motivation?
Hip-Hop/Rap. It’s impossible to find an artist that doesn’t suit your taste.
What do you feel is most beautiful about you?
I would say my loyalty to people. The majority of the people I’m close to in my life are people that I would die for if I had to.
When and how did you discover your passion in life?
By simply enjoying all the different movies I’d watch and books I’d read.
What's your take on life (in the philosophical sense)?
No matter how good you are at something, there is always someone better than you. So why stop improving?
