Terance Shipman, Tuskegee University- c/o 1992, Elementary Education

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I’m from Decatur, Georgia. My father was a famous women's basketball coach at Tuskegee. His 1982 team played in the first Division 2 National Championship game.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I had no choice. My father was at Tuskegee coaching. I was the third generation to go to Tuskegee. My grandmother, dad, aunt, and sister all went there.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
Tuskegee is so unique. To walk around the same campus my family members did. I even went to class in some of the same buildings. Buildings that students built.
To make friends with people from all over the world. They all wanted to come to Tuskegee.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
The football games at Tuskegee are the best. The student body is the 12th man. Homecoming week was an experience in itself. It got better each year I was there.
There was nothing like being around a sea of black people.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Dr. Frank Toland. Had a profound impact on my life. He was one of the leading Black historians in the country. I wasn’t a history major, but took every history class I could under him.
My love for Black history came from taking his classes. He had the only class in the country about African American scientists and inventors at the time.
What is your major? and Why did you choose it?
Elementary education. I wanted to make a big impact on children’s lives.
What to date has been your proudest moment @ Your HBCU?
I have attended and graduated from three HBCU’s. Tuskegee University 92’, Hampton University 94’, and Clark Atlanta University 13’.
