Tanya Martino , Voorhees College- c/o 1995, Liberal Arts

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I’m from South Carolina and the television show "A Different World" and my Aunt also a 1984 graduate of Voorhees College.

I’m a Hbcu Lover! A 1995 graduate of Voorhees College and 2007 graduate of Clark Atlanta University. I’m so proud to be the youngest alumni inducted into the Voorhees College Hall of Fame 2016.
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I choose an HBCU over a Pwi because of our amazing history as African Americans. Elizabeth E. Wright the founder of Voorhees College and the first female that started a college at the age of 23 before women could vote has been the driving force that keeps me motivated.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
Voorhees College has a rich history and a bright future. Inspired by the tenacity and commitment of Elizabeth Evelyn Wright, Ralph Voorhees and his wife, philanthropists from Clinton, New Jersey donated $5,000 for the purchase of land and construction of the school's first building.
I had the pleasure of serving as President of the newly-formed Metro Atlanta Alumni Chapter which donated over $22,000 to Voorhees College. Our gifts helped many students from Georgia to overcome financial challenges and remain in school. Times are still tough for students and parents who are trying to hold fast to their dreams.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My first time experience at Voorhees College was attending homecoming.

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
All the professors had a major impact however Dr. Harden had the greatest. Taking his business class taught me how to research and use Bloomberg as one of my resources.
What to date has been your proudest moment @ Your HBCU?
2016 Alumni Hall of Fame.
