Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*

I am from a very small town, call Roanoke Rapids, NC but I currently live in Greensbro,NC.

I was introduced to HBCUs by my mother she attended Elizabeth City State University .

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*

I was always destined to attend an HBCU. Every year we’d go to ECSU Homecoming (my mother alma mater) and even as a young girl seeing all of the many African American’s gather in a friendly, welcoming manner was extraordinary.

Not to mention it was a fun time to spend with my family as well. When it came time for me to go off to college I was torn between a few HBCU’s ECSU, North Carolina A&T, and Shaw University.

My ultimate decision was Elizabeth City State University because I received a scholarship to attend the school and simply because of, you guessed it, High School Day LOL.

I did not like Elizabeth City State my freshman year, and the following school year I transferred to the greatest HBCU of all times Winston-Salem State University. I fell in LOVE with WSSU. I loved the people, the atmosphere, the events, but most importantly the unity we as young African Americans had together.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*

The story of my experience is a culmination of academics, campus life and friends . But, WSSU means more…the pride instilled and the guiding principles taught solidified my foundation to become fruitful in my life’s work. Although I hold a MA from a PWI.

4

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*

Fried chicken Wednesdays in the cafe was like a family reunion.

That’s the only time you will see people in the Capital Wednesdays when we have chicken and Fridays when we have fish.

5

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*

My professors from the College of Arts and Science meant business! They taught theory, but also life lessons that I didn’t realize until I entered life after college and reflected on their words of wisdom.

To name the most influential person at WSSU would be Dr. Brian Blount.

He gave tough love that translated to my present day inner strength, tenacity and discipline. I would not be who I am today, without WSSU.
