Sherrod Long , North Carolina A & T State University- c/o 2016, Engineering Construction

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I’m from Charlotte, North Carolina. My mom introduced me to HBCUs. She attended FAMU.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I wanted to attend a university where I was celebrated and not just tolerated. North Carolina A&T created that atmosphere.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
I transferred to A&T from a PWI after my first year. From my classes on campus I personally felt that my professors cared about my education, and I wasn’t just another number in a 500 person lecture class. I was able to build lasting relationships with friends and some professors. I’m actually friends with a few of them on Facebook.

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My first time experiencing Homecoming was an “out of this world” kind of experience. Alumni from across the world, come to one place to feel at home. It was more than just a football game and a dope halftime show. Felt like I was at a family reunion. I partied and made professional connections, I was able to capture the best of both worlds.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Then, my environmental engineering professor, now department chair Dr. Teasely was really the best. She went above and beyond what I could ever ask for.
Her office door was always open for students. You could stop by and ask for help for anything from an upcoming exam to general life and she would take the time to sort things out with you. Anytime I stop on campus now, I stop by her office.
