Rasaq Adeyemi, Bethune-Cookman University- c/o 2006, Liberal Arts
Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am from Atlanta, GA.
I was introduced to HBCU's when my dad (NC A&T Alum) took me to the Heritage classic as a child. I saw TSU vs FAMU marching band and it was a wrap.

"We have to support each other."
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
It was a really simple decision for me. I asked myself "where would I feel more comfortable being myself".
Honoree at the B-CU 40 under 40 Rose Gold Celebration
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
During my freshman and junior years, I had a really hard time breaking some of the less responsible habits from high school, and my grades reflected it.
It was a small handful of professors I had that saw my potential and truly invested in me. They actually helped me break down my learning style and how to use it to my advantage. From that point, I never made anything below a 3.4 and mentored incoming underclassmen that enrolled with the same challenges.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My freshman brothers in the marching band walked down to the beach side of Daytona to have our first "College Party". We thought everyone was going to try and "clown the freshman", but as soon as we walked in they showed nothing but love and I knew I was at the right school.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Dr. Kashif, My African-Psy professor
Dr. Hayes, My Africain History professor (and debate team coach)
Dr. Orey, My Music instructor.
Ms. Allen, My elementary education professor.
I could go on.
What life-changing books would you recommend to others to read?
The Alchemist, The Science of Getting Rich.
