Phoebe Johnson, Benedict College- c/o 2018, Journalism & Mass Communications

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am from Lake City Florida. I actially Introduced myself to HBCUs out of curiosity.

2018 SIAC Championships
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I wanted be somewhere students looked more like myself and understood the struggles that I go through everyday as an African American.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
It has its ups and down but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Everything about life I’ve learned from my HBCU family.
The faculty and staff are like extremely close family members. They’re moms and dads away from home. My College taught me the importance of networking and putting myself out there. Never downplay yourself because you aren’t getting what the next person is getting. I appreciate my people more now than I ever have.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
I had a plethora of first at each HBCU I attended. From the magnificent bands, the love of the Greek life and just the all around pride of being black and belonging.
I wouldn't trade it for anything. I definitely encourage all African American children to attend.

My daughter Journee
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Professor Cakley, Herman Howard, Henry Moore and Dr Alex Gorelik. These four men have given me so much courage, confidence and drive.
They pushed me when I wanted to give up. The times that I didn't see how talented and blessed I was they saw it.
What sports do/did you play at your HBCU? What positions?
I run track for Benedict College.
