Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I was born in the beautiful city of Tallahassee, Florida and both my aunt and older cousin graduated from Famu so my family pretty much bled orange and green.
I grew up going to Famu's homecoming parades and games every year it was like a holiday to my family. I was always so amazed and fascinated by the beautiful black cheerleaders and all of the different queens smiling and waving at me. I remember one year one of the cheerleaders walked out of the parade and gave me a hug and told me I was pretty, being that I was so young that was the most amazing experience to me.
I moved to Deerfield Beach, Florida when I was 10 and I had an art teacher when I was in the 7th grade who had graduated from Famu and I told him I wanted to go there as well. One day he asked me did I know what an HBCU was and I said no so he told me to look it up when I got home, print out a list of all of them, and bring it back to class the next day. When I brought the list back to him he said, "I want you to look up the meaning of an HBCU is and I want you to memorize at least ten of the HBCUs on this list".
For about a week he would ask me a question about HBCUs everyday, at the time I did not understand why he made me do this I thought it was just busy work. Now I see that he was teaching me the importance of an HBCU and I thank God for him.
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I chose an HBCU over a pwi because I wanted to be somewhere that I would feel understood and not underestimated.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
I have always admired all of the prestigious and intelligent Famu alumni. My earth and space science professor was telling the class her biography on the first day of class and she said, "I am the first female African-American geologist". I was and still am so amazed because I know she worked hard to get where she is and I think it is just a blessing that she came back to Famu to be a professor.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My first time experiencing a Famu football game as a Famu student literally brought tears to my eyes. To see so many people from alumni, to students, to locals, to Famu parents and family come together and just enjoy time with each other was an indescribable feeling.
I can vividly remember seeing the Marching 100 out on the field for the first time and I remember thinking, "I can't believe I am really here". To know that I had dreamed about that particular moment all of my life and to see it happening right before my eyes made me smile from ear to ear. At that moment I realized that I had made one of my biggest dreams come true.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
The professor that has impacted and is still impacting my life is Dr. April McCray. She was my ENC1101 and 1102 professor and I loved her style of teaching and I loved her as a person. She was always so real and she did not mind giving one on one help.
One time I had received a lower grade than usual so she told me to come speak to her one day after class. I came to her office and she asked what was going on and I told her I was going through some personal things; I stayed in her office for hours just talking about life while receiving words of wisdom from her.
What do you feel is most beautiful about you?
I feel that the most beautiful thing about me is my forgiving heart. God forgives us and still loves us no matter how much we hurt and disappoint him and I feel it is only right that we treat our fellow brothers and sisters the same. We are supposed to be like Christ so I feel it is only right.
