Morgan Verrett, Tuskegee University- c/o 2018, Animal & Veterinary Sciences

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am from Oakland California and I was introduced to HBCUs at the Black College Expo event in Oakland.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I chose to attend an HBCU over a PWI because a family atmosphere was extremely important to me as I would be 3000 miles away from my own family for the next few years.
I wanted to be in an environment that looked at me as just one of their many, many success stories and not an anomaly.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
My experience at the Illustrious Tuskegee University has granted me opportunities in research that I wouldn’t have otherwise been exposed to or considered for.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
The first time I entered a laboratory at Tuskegee, my professor told the entire class “This facility may look intimidating, but don’t worry.
We are all brothers and sisters with a common goal. I am here to help you reach yours. We are all in this together”. I will never forget how accomplished I felt passing the class. My professor’s encouragement helped me realize my love for research.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
My professors were key in every milestone I accomplished during my college career. HBCU Professors are family and will look after you like your parents would.
My Anatomy teacher spent countless of her office hours and free time making sure I was set up for each semester and that I knew in what direction I wanted my life to go. It was her motivation that pushed me to believe in myself to graduate this Summer 2018.
