Mhorgan Stephens, Clark Atlanta University- c/o 2021, Business Administration with a concentration in Management
Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am from South Carolina. I had a lot of family members who attended HBCUs.
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
Growing up I was exposed to a very diverse group (neighborhood, School, city, etc.) However, I never experienced being surrounded by people who looked similar to me. With my going into college and starting a new chapter in life, I really wanted to be exposed to something I never had the chance to experience.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
Finishing my freshman year has been life changing. My experience was really one to remember. I was connected with amazing scholars and professionals. I got involved in many organizations that allowed me to really give back. I also had the opportunity to be in leadership positions.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
Our motto at CAU is " I'll find a way or Make one." Understanding what this meant really helped me out when I first got there.
Mission accomplished is a program started to emphasize the importance of Mental Health.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Dr. Kimbro - This man CHANGED my life. You will never go in a class and leave bored. Any time he opens his mouth you know that there will be power to follow. He is truly a leader and teacher. His books are also amazing as well.
Professor Hill - This women is phenomenal. This is the best english class I ever had. While we were required to do a lot of work, each one served a purpose. The conversation we had in class really allowed you to think and put things in a new perspective.
What life-changing books would you recommend to others to read?
Travel lightly by Dr. Craig Oliver, Any of Dr. Kimbro's books, My book- I have Itp But ITP Does Not Have Me The Mhorgan Stephens story. (Available on Amazon) https://www.amazon.com/have-Does-Have-Mhorgan-Stephens/dp/0692665552/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1529066047&sr=8-1&keywords=mhorgan+stephens
