LaNita Hughes, Grambling State University- c/o 2018, Journalism & Mass Communication with a concentration in Print Journalism

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am from Beverly Hills ,California. I chose to come to Grambling state University because I was offered a soccer scholarship and my sister played for their 1st women’s inaugural soccer team .

4x Campus Queen (Miss December ,Miss Omega Tau Pi, Miss OBB)
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I was offered a full ride soccer scholarship and I'm a city girl who’s never lived in the south . So I wanted to experience a little change.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
I’ve enjoyed my experience at Grambling . Grambling has definitely taught me a lot about life . I’m very involved on campus as a soccer player , Campus Queen, a sorority sister , and sports reporter . I’ve connected with so many people , learned a lot of life lessons and I wouldn’t trade the experience I’ve had for anything .
Grambling has definitely molded me into the woman and future leader I’ve become.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
Well it was a cultural shock at first , you know being a city girl and all . It took me a little minute to adjust, but being part of a team that became my sisters it wasn’t that hard to adjust .
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Mr. Alan Blakeney, he is the director over the television center. He gave me my first break , he saw a talent in me and gave me my first shot at a talk show . I was a freshman with my own talk show “the porch “ and since then it’s been a breeze I got a lot of internships because of his help & experiences.
He taught me everything I need to know about the television industry , reporting , how to operate a camera , edit , etc. And also really every professor in the Mass Communications department taught me little aspects about life , the journalist world , and just over all key components I will never forget .
