Lamar Benefield , Miles College- c/o 2018, Communications

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I’m from Birmingham, Alabama as a result my grandfather by the name of Joe Benefield introduced me to Miles College he was a Mathematics Professor years before I came so he informed me about the outstanding institution of Miles College.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
Personally I didn’t look at choosing a program as far as a PWI versus an HBCU. Miles College Mass Communications program triggered my interest.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
My experience was priceless like I would not start over if I had the chance to I’ll forever embrace the skills that I learned during my experience at Miles College.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
A “first time” experience for me at Miles College was experiencing Miles College vs Tuskegee University football rivalry game. The environment was so lit.
But at the end of the game both sides came together like champions. I really thought that was cool to see two HBCU institutions expose unity on the football field after putting all that hard work in on the field.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
I actually have several but I’ll name a few.
So I would like to recognize Ms. McConico my Digital Journalist Professor for teaching me how to perfect my craft far as a being on time when it comes to deadlines and being more creative with my content. At first I didn’t realize how important practice was until I gave practice a try pertaining to my content.
Once I started practicing my stand ups and doing more interviews I became so good with it.
Also Mrs. Snider who was my Public Relations Professor, she exposed my state of mind to networking on a higher level. She taught me the value of how to create a platform and I use all of the knowledge she taught me and put it into my craft.
Last but not least Dr. Baptiste he is the Chairman of The Division of Communications. Who was also one of my professors Dr. Baptiste instilled journalism short cuts to me on how to write a great news story. I use to fear him but to be honest I was uncomfortable in his class sessions and I didn’t realize that I was growing the whole time.
I’m so happy I made it through his courses because now I appreciate those days of hard work. So to conclude all of that I can use all of the knowledge that I learned from The Division of Communications Department at Miles College to create multiple streams of income for myself in life.
