Kierra Brooks , Florida A & M University- c/o 2016, Health Science/Physical Therapy

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I'm from Ocala, Florida. My cousin introduced me to FAMU!

"..love is an HBCU! "
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I chose to go to an HBCU over a PWI for the simple fact of embracing my culture and learning more about who and what I am!

"Florida A&M University taught me survival, culture, and love!"
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
Florida A&M University taught me survival, culture, and love! I came from a predominately white high school and when I first stepped foot on campus at FAMU I was overwhelmed! I immediately fell in love and knew I was in the right place! Seeing all of that melanin took a hold of my soul and I sunk right in!
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My first juice party was Gorilla Thrilla and I was totally excited. For one I've never been to a real party before prior to attending FAMU, so this was real big for me ! There were so many people and it was the alpha's party! The vibes were awesome and everyone was so happy! I didn't get back to my dorm until about 4 am !
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Professor Tyler and Yussif were my favorite! They knew how to teach and kept my attention the entire class period. Not only did they teach about that particular subject but they both taught me life lessons. I could talk to either about my situations or ask for any advice!
What's your take on love (in the philosophical sense)?
Love is something we all have to face at some point in life. It's a variety of different feelings, states and attitudes.
Love will make you do things you'd never think you'd do! It takes over your soul and makes your body feel like it's floating, it's a very special feeling that you don't ever want to let go. Once you have it, tuck it away and try your hardest to never let it go.
Also, love is an HBCU!
