Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*

I am from Trinidad and Tobago, and Wiley College was introduced to me through a recruiter who came to Trinidad to recruit new athletes for their revival of the Athletic Department.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*

I would say this was God's will. I was considering other offers but some how, through God's favor, this scholarship was offered to me the fastest and I was sold by the time I heard it was a Black College. I was eager to learn this new culture.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*

Coming out of Trinidad and Tobago, this was surely a culture shock heading all the way to Marshall, TX. I was introduced by the lovely choir at Wiley, followed by the victorious basketball team, also followed by other people who would look at us strangely because of our accents.

This only motivated me to push harder at training, and in my academics. I was a two time "All-American" on the track, a member of the 3.0 Club, and also graduated 'Magna Cum Laude'. This made my family and by extension countrymen proud.

I would recommend Wiley College to anyone from my country.

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*

My first time experiences were very interesting. I was very intrigued by the Fraternities and Sororities at Wiley. I have never seen things like these before and I was fully amazed by the way they carried about themselves and danced with pride.

Another first experience which was amazing was when they had the culture exchange. We were able to show our dances from our country, see dances from Africa, Venezuela, Columbia, Egypt and many other countries.

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*

The professors that impacted my life were Dr. Solomon Massenda and Dr. Carol Hicks.

These were not teachers in my major but would religiously check on my grades, make sure I understood life lessons, and also keep me engrossed while I had Literature and English classes with them.

Dr. Massenda (now deceased) was the one who stood out nonetheless. He never ceased to not remind me that I am a very powerful being, and that I should not settle for less. I would definitely say because of his support I graduated with Honors. God Bless his soul.
