Jessica Williams, Alcorn State University- c/o 2018, Animal & Veterinary Sciences

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I’m from Memphis, TN. My track coach and one of my teachers went to Alcorn so they kind of encouraged me to apply.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
Well when I first applied to school I had no idea what pwi or an HBCU was. I’m so glad that I unknowingly picked an HBCU. The best choice I ever made.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
Alcorn has won HBCU of the year and is currently one of top ranking HBCUs. I can easily understand why because I’ve had so many opportunities from going out of the country to networking with so many people.
At the same time I gained a family away from home. It’s such a great atmosphere. We make everyone feel welcomed.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
I instantly got a family vibe when I got to Alcorn. It's like every event the school had was like a family reunion.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Most of all the professors at Alcorn care about their students and want to see them do well.
My advisor and professor, Dr. Cassandra Vaughn was like my mom away from home. She was there for my tears and always uplifted me when I needed it. Even though I’ve graduated she is still there for me.
