Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*

I am from Chicago, Illinois. I was introduced to HBCUs my sophomore year of high school by my mentor who attended Hampton University.

2

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*

I chose an HBCU because I saw a difference in the students that attended them than the black students who attend a PWI.

They just carried themselves differently. They exuded a different type of confidence that I’ve come to learn stems from the pride in their universities and their history.

Also, I wanted to go to be in an environment that was going to cultivate the success of so many black men and women that I aspire to have.

3

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*

My institution is known as The “Unsinkable” Albany State University.

Our sixth President Billy C. Black deemed us this after surviving a flood that should have caused my school to shut down. ASU has survived four major floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes however we are still standing.

That story has played a role into our student experience at ASU. It has shown us that no matter the circumstances, we will rise. We will thrive. We will be resilient. We will be “Unsinkable.”

4

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*

One of my first time experiences was Homecoming. It’s such an amazing experience. The atmosphere of the campus is completely different during Homecoming.

5

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*

Dr. Williams and the Administrators of the Honors Programs have helped me to find scholarships, internships, and prepare me for post-graduation.

They all have poured into my success as both a student and a professional.

All the professors in the Chemistry Department have influenced me in some shape or form.

6

What to date has been your proudest moment @ Your HBCU?

My proudest moment was becoming the 76th Miss Albany State University for the 2018-2019 academic year. It had been something I had prayed about for two years long. Becoming Miss ASU was so surreal. I couldn’t believe I had finally accomplished one of my main college goals.
