Jaelynn Snyder, Voorhees College- c/o 2021, Mass Communications

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am from Maryland but live in Georgia. I did not get introduced to HBCU’s, I basically grew up around people that went to different ones and them sharing their experiences.

2018-2019 Miss Mass Communication (Coronation Ceremony for Mr and Mrs. Voorhees College: D’Ariel Walker and Nathanial Kemp) @deewalker_20
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I chose an HBCU because I noticed that some of the top schools are HBCUs. I have also noticed how much of a family they are especially when It came down to homecomings.
I also love how HBCUs want to empower young African Americans and allow them to be more comfortable because they have mentors and teachers that fully understand the African American background.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
My HBCU experience has been long and Fun.
Being a sophomore in college, I have learned how to deal with being an out of state college student. Attending Voorhees College allows people to express themselves. Due to the small population each student receives one on one attention they need to be successful.
Being at a small school allows everyone to receive the attention in the classroom they need. I am grateful that VC takes their time to make sure their students receives a tremendous amount of support. Whether you need help with an assignment or just need somebody to talk to.
The staff and even alumni will reach out to you. At Voorhees everybody is family. VC gives second chances to people who are struggling to find a school. It allowed me to become more confident and outgoing. VC also helped me with believing in myself. Our motto is Believe, Became and Become.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My first official college homecoming was my favorite “First time” experience because I was given the opportunity to see the alumni come back and talk with the current students especially freshmen and I just felt more welcomed and was surprised at how many of them came back because usually not a lot of alumni’s come back to their school.

“I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me” Philippians 4:13....Voorhees College produces multiple opportunities and provides the one on one attention each student truly needs. I would like to thank VC for opening their doors for me...
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
The ones in the classroom such as Dr. Branch who is the psychology teacher often kept her students on the right path by allowing them to have a clear mindset on different situations.
Outside of the classroom Mrs. Jones was the one that impacted my life. She has an open door policy, not only does she gives us a chance to receive scholarships but she also allows us to just talk things through especially if we are stressing about school. Having adults like them around makes the college lifestyle way easier for me.
If you could only speak two sentences to the youth coming after you what would you say?
Never give up because one day all the hard work is going to pay off.
