Farrah Johnson, Southern University- c/o 2019, Social Science

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am from Walker, Louisiana. I was introduced to HBCUs, Southern University in particular, from my family who are also Southern Alumni.

Knowledge + Wisdom = Impact
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
Growing up in Walker Louisiana, I grew up in a school system that was predominately white, I graduated from a high school that had only 3 black graduates. So it was extremely important to me to go to an HBCU and truly learn about our rich and extraordinary history.
At Southern, I was not afraid to be myself and ultimately was comfortable in the skin I’m in. Attending an HBCU is the best decision I’ve ever made!
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
Southern University and A&M College will always hold a special place in my heart. Southern helped to mold me into the woman I am today. My experience has been filled with both ups and downs, but most importantly attending Southern has given me life lessons that I will carry on with me throughout life after college and within my career.

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My first and most valuable experience at Southern was my freshman year during “Welcome Week.” It was my first taste of the life of an HBCU student and I fell in love!
Experiencing all of the various organizations, the Royal Court, and Greek life, I instantly knew Southern University was where I needed to be.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
My professor, Dr. Ollie Christian, has impacted my life since I entered the Department of Sociology.
Throughout every trial I have faced during undergrad she has been right by my side encouraging me along the way. There became a point in time where I did not believe college was meant for me, and the best decision was for me to withdraw from Southern, but she would not allow that to happen!
Dr. Christian taught me the importance of never giving up, even when going through your toughest trials, and I will be forever grateful to her for that!
