Fania Cherry, Allen University- c/o 2020, Social Science

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am from Harlem, New York but I currently live in Jersey City, NJ.
I’ve been introduced to HBCUs from running track in high school. I’ve received scholarship offers from several HBCUs.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I choose an HBCU over a PWI because the state I came from I’ve never been introduced to an HBCU, so I wanted to get the experience being that my high school was so diverse.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
My experience at Allen University has really been a good experience. I meet new people, it’s a small school so the classes are a good size and I receive all of the help I need.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My first time experience at my HBCU was a little hard for me because I came to the south not knowing anyone, I didn’t have any family or friends here I dressed different from everyone and I wasn’t used to the slow life but it didn’t take me long to adapt.

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
The best professor that I’ve had was DR. Chic Smith and I’ll NEVER forget her she is one of the realest teachers I’ve ever met.
I felt like she was a second mom she helped me in and outside of the classroom.
Are you a member of a sorority?
Yes
