1

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*

I am from a small town called Fayette, MS. I was introduced to HBCUs through my community and family. My uncle attended Alcorn State University and I always looked up to my uncle and wanted to be like him when I grew up. So attending a HBCU was always a part of the plan after graduation.

2

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*

I had long history with HBCUs. My family attended HBCUs and I always love the energy of the HBCU from the band, to the culture and the ability to learn from other great African American.

I wanted to be in a environment that I could learn from an African American point of view.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*

My HBCU experience changed my life forever. I remember being a little depressed after high school because I wanted to attend Morehouse College. Being that I had not totally prepared myself for college by going over and beyond academically, I wasn't accepted.

So I embarked upon my journey at Alcorn State University not in a very good space.

After enrolling at Alcorn State University and starting my journey there, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Alcorn State University prepared me for the real world and equipped me to be prepared for the professional arena.

I learned how to be politically savvy, speak with confidence and also learned how to combat racism and injustices when faced with those in the workplace. Alcorn State University help me to build character and equipped me with the knowledge to be a world changer in my community.

4

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*

My very first experience at my HBCU that I will never forget is moving into my dorm room and being greeted by all the senior leaders and students to help freshman move in on campus and adjust to college life.

I will never forget the spirit of unity and family that day moving into my dorm room. At that moment I knew that I was at home and no matter the disappointment I had experienced from not getting accepted into Morehouse College, that my experience at Alcorn State University would be one that I would never forget.

5

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*

Dr. Dickson Idusuyi made one of the most valuable impacts on my life as a student and after as an adult.

I remember attending Dr. Idusuyi state and local government class and being able to not just learn the textbook version of HBCUs, but he gave us life lesson on what how to face injustices when we see them within whatever area of society we would work in professionally.

I have used his advice and counsel throughout my career. I remember him helping me to get into graduate school after being rejected from the law schools in which I applied to. Dr. Idusuyi mentored, encouraged, and held me accountable through that process. Today, we still stay connected and I call him for counsel.
