1

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*

I am from Detroit, Michigan and I was introduced to HBCU’s by a former mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick who was a graduate of FAMU.

2

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*

After visiting a few campuses such as Morehouse and Clark Atlanta I knew it was the atmosphere I wanted to be a part of.

3

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*

My experience at FAMU was nothing short of spectacular. To be around my people and have the ability to mold each other, grow with each other and become life long friends and family.

4

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*

Being from “Up North” I wasn’t used to Southern Hospitality.

I mean we speak but as far as holding full on conversations with a stranger was unheard of. It’s just something you can’t get away from being in the south. So here I am a Freshman in orientation with about 50 other freshman and everyone socializing holding conversations except for the Midwest kids, awkward right?

Needless to say it didn’t take long before we were in the mix, socializing.

5

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*

Dr. Leeshawn Thomas continually pushed me inside and outside of the classroom. Dr. Thomas was my professor for A&P 1+2, Comparative Anatomy, and Vert. Phys. I think 85% of the questions he asked our class were directed to me.

Every time he saw me outside of class (office hours, gym, random places) he’d ask me about a subject or concept we’d discussed in class.

He made sure I was retaining information and not just studying to pass. Which helped tremendously, a lot of the concepts that were discussed in his class mixed with some physics and chemistry were on almost every exam I’ve taken after undergrad and I used them in the Operating Room daily.

6

What is your major? and Why did you choose it?

Molecular Cell Biology and Chemistry. At the age of 7 I became intrigued with the human body. In middle and high school we had internships instead of class on Tuesdays and Thursday’s.

My internship was at Henry Ford Hospital as an Autopsy Technician/Pathology Assistant. I wanted to study and master organs and organ systems on a molecular and chemical level.

Hence the degrees in Molecular/Cell Biology and Chemistry.
