2

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*

I chose an HBCU because I was only introduced to PWIs by my high school and there were instances where I was racially profiled. After those moments it encouraged me to attend a school where people looked like me.

3

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*

When I first came to Texas Southern I was a little bit antsy because I have never been around a lot of black people and my personality was different than the rest.

It was move-in week and I still was on the search for who I was and my mentors Rayna McClintock and Devontrell Davis opened me with welcome arms and felt like family.

Our motto is “Excellence in achievement“ and my peers showed me what that truly meant. Every day my peers, international winning debate team, and advisors give me the tools to do what it takes.

4

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*

I have never visited one until I went to Texas Southern, I only heard about them.

My HBCU experience was one that I can never forget. I grew up in a small town in the East Region of Texas and in my area HBCUS were never introduced or talked about but luckily I had family members that attended one.

5

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*

Two of my favorite professors at TSU are Dr Michon Benson Professor of African American literature and Professor Felicia Garrett Professor of Texas Government.

Dr. Benson has taught a different way of thinking when it comes to black culture and Professor Garrett encouraged me to be involved in Texas Politics.

6

How are you positively active on campus? (e.g. clubs, SGA, etc.)

Yes. I am a member of the Student Government Association serving as the Executive Vice President, a former Resident Assistant for Housing, Vice President of the Political Science club, and a member of Campus Pals a Peer Mentoring group for 1st year students.
