Cydney Calhoun, Johnson C. Smith University- c/o 2021, Sports Management

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I’m from a small suburb in Cleveland, Ohio and I was in a scholar program that promoted HBCUs a lot and it sparked my interest.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I chose my HBCU (Johnson C. Smith University) because I wanted to be around people that look like me and have that same drive to be great. I wanted to have a relationship with my professors and not just be another number to them. I wanted to feel like people cared if I succeed or not and that’s exactly what I got.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
My HBCU believe it or not was exactly what I wanted in my school. Small and family oriented. I had to make my experience because no one can make you enjoy college. Along the way I have made some amazing friends and teammates and I’m excited to see what’s next for me at Smith.
I have been on the volleyball team and track team for the past two years and managing my athletics with academics helped me in a timely way and helped me see my priorities clearly. With that being said I have maintained a 3.0 and up since I have been on campus. The next big thing would be being a member of the best sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. It has opened the next chapter for me here at Smith and all I can say now is the sky is the limit.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
The first time I was on campus was amazing, meeting coaches students and professors it made me feel like I already had a support system behind me. Also being able to enroll in a summer program to help me prepare for my first fall semester helped me in more ways than one.

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Professor King! Most students including myself think he is a tough professor but he taught me to be punctual and take pride in my work because you never know who is going to see it. He had also gave me advice on tools I may need heading down my career path of Physical Therapy. If I had the opportunity to take any of his classes again I would in a heartbeat.
What sports do/did you play at your HBCU? What positions?
Volleyball I am a setter.
Track and Field I was a thrower.
