Courtney Stewart, Cheyney University- c/o 2018, Psychology

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
Originally from Hamburg, PA. The women’s bowling coach for Cheyney University contacted me about bowling on a collegiate level.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I qualified for a full academic scholarship through Cheyney’s Keystone Honors Academy and I was able to take my bowling career to the next level so to me, there were no other options.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
From the moment I stepped foot onto Cheyney’s campus, I was involved in teams and clubs. Bowling team, SAAC, SGA, president of psychology club, head RA for the honors Housing, and in spring 2017 I became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. In my opinion, the best thing about my university is that there is so much opportunity to be involved and meet new people but it is small enough where you really feel like it’s home.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
After growing up in a predominately white town, my entire HBCU experience has been a “first time.”
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Dr. Thomas. She is my advisor and one of my psychology professors and she has literally been my mom away from home. She’ll be the first one to call me if I miss class and ask if I’m okay and then curse me out for missing class.
Also Dr. Green. She is a sociology professor and I got the news my grandmother had died when I was in her class. I don’t know if I would have gotten through the day without her and her support.
What and where are the historical places on campus?
All of Cheyney University is historic because it is the 1st HBCU founded in 1837.
