Brooke Brown, Savannah State University- c/o 2018, Social Work

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I was born in Mobile, Alabama and raised in Ellenwood, Georgia. Both my parents attended Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Stillman’s homecoming always falls on my birthday weekend which is where I was introduced to a HBCU.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I attended a PWI my freshman year and I chose to transfer to an HBCU because I wanted to experience the traditions HBCUs have.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
My HBCU took education seriously! The Social Work program at Savannah State University is nothing to play with! I learned so much and the opportunities that I recieved were all a blessing.
At my HBCU the staff and professors work closely with you throughout your years to insure you have a successful transition.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
While I attended Alabama A&M University, I experienced a huge social presence.
Everyone was actively involved in organizations whether greek, dance, modeling, fashion, sports, Sga, programs and activities, book clubs. They had it all! Coming from a quiet PWI, it was a first to attend a school with so much going on both academically and socially. I enjoyed every bit!
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Dr. Deloach (SSU)
Dr. Byrd (SSU)
Dr. Tuggle (SSU)
These 3 wonderful professors can be tough, but in good reason! Their tone and outer appearance might seem intimidating but they do that on purpose and they mean well. I have learned so much from them during my time in the social work program. They have made me trust and believe in my own abilities, while giving me all the tools I need to practice in my profession.
Their wisdom and connections are untouched. Any future social work student attending Savannah State University should not be afraid but be ready!
What sports do/did you play at your HBCU? What positions?
Cheerleader.
Best restaurants on/near campus? Best dishes?
Tiger Express & Tiger Deli is best on campus dining.
What are the chants heard most often at the sporting events?
I love, I love, I love, I love, my S-S
I love my S-S, I love my U-U, S-S-U!
I love my H in front of my B in front of my C I love my U behind my S, that's SSU!
Where is the “yard” located?
Up-top on campus. In the Alexis Circle surrounded by all of the freshman dorms and administration buildings.
