Brittany Harris, University of Maryland Eastern Shore- c/o 2012, Behavioral Rehabilitation

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I live in Baltimore MD and my mother didn’t want me going too far. She was extremely paranoid about me going away to college in 2008 since the Virginia Tech tragedy had just taken place a year before. However I refused to stay in Baltimore.
Now don’t get me wrong the schools in Baltimore are great schools, but I grew up here and felt it was time for me to get away. UMES is only 2 hours from Baltimore, it was a compromise for my mom and I…not too far, not too close!

"My HBCU has awarded me experiences that have helped me grow from a girl into a woman..."
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
N/A
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
I have completely enjoyed my time at UMES thus far. Attending my HBCU has inspired me to do more than just live in my community and culture, it has propelled me forward by encouraging me to work in and for my community and culture.
My HBCU has awarded me experiences that have helped me grow from a girl into a woman, and while every day hasn’t been the best day every day has taught me something new. I love my HBCU!
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
Honestly, I cant think of any.

"My proudest moment was when I heard my name announced as the 2011-2012 Miss UMES for the first time."
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Dr. Lakeisha Harris has had a lasting impression on me as a person and especially as a student. She was my professor for my Case Management class and was very down-to-earth and lively in and outside the classroom. She taught all her students that it’s okay to have fun and enjoy college while maintaining good grades and getting work done as well. She is the perfect example of a well-rounded individual and I truly admire her for that.
Best restaurants on/near campus? Best dishes?
UMES is pretty much in the middle of nowhere BUT we have a McDonalds of course! LOL. I personally like Grill Billy’s and their fried shrimp basket!
College crush?
Oooo! Wouldn’t YOU like to know?! Not so sure I want to reveal that…*blushing* ????
Ghost stories involving buildings or spots on campus?
No ghost stories, but our campus does get pretty spooky at night. There have been a few nights where I was walking to my room and had to look over my shoulder a few times. LOL
What is your major? and Why did you choose it?
My major is Behavioral Rehabilitation. I believe that a number of the issues in the African American community stem from broken homes/families especially in the community that I live in, and I want to be a positive part of the change. I plan on attending grad school and earning my Ph.D in counseling psychology. Eventually I will establish a private practice in Marriage and Family therapy specializing in adolescent psychology.
Plus, I’m ALWAYS the friend that all my friends turn to for advice..may as well get paid for it!
What to date has been your proudest moment @ Your HBCU?
My proudest moment was when I heard my name announced as the 2011-2012 Miss UMES for the first time.
Where are the spots to go to if you wanted to cuddle with your boy or girlfriend?
The best cuddling spots are in your own respective places (i.e. dorms, apartments, etc), but on a warm night it’s always nice to go sit under the stars on the football field bleachers or on a bench in the Academic Circle.
What are the chants heard most often at the sporting events?
I love my U in front of my M, my M in front of my E, my E in front of my S, I love my U.M.E.S!
I am hoping to bring back “Shoo-Whaa” I learned it during Homecoming 2011 from some really nice Alumni ????
How are you positively active on campus? (e.g. clubs, SGA, etc.)
I am very active on campus. I am the 2011-2012 Miss UMES, a member of The Human Ecology Club, Stars Status, Student Rehabilitation Association, and a model. I also support other organizations by attending their events.
Where is the “yard” located?
The “Yard” also known as “The Runway” is located in front of the SSC (Student Services Center). You can find EVERYONE there especially on a warm sunny day!!
What and where are the historical places on campus?
The entire campus is a historical place! The campus of UMES was a slave plantation before becoming a school.
What to date has been your saddest moment at your HBCU?
My HBCU has unfortunately experienced 6 Hawks passing (if my memory serves me correct) since I have been enrolled.(Send out your positive thoughts to their family members – This is a bit graphic but also read more in detail about another student Antwan Johnson)
How did you overcome your nervousness about going to college?
I am very outgoing and have a strong support system, so I wasn’t nervous about attending college. I was actually extremely excited!
I am currently undecided.
