Breonna Williams , Texas Southern University- c/o 2018, Health Science/Physical Therapy

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am a native of Dallas, Texas and I once attended Friendship West Baptist Church and there were so many Texas Southern University Alums who were so proud and excited to be a tiger . However, Veta Holt , CFO of Friendship West Baptist Church reached out to me due to my interest in the university and connected me with amazing Alums who blessed me with a scholarship and I was sold !

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I’m a woman who loves her culture , history, and future so why not get that every day while building your future . I wanted to learn and gain more knowledge from someone who understands where I come from and can help me get to where God wants me to be without judgement of my skin color or my past .
To learn from a professor who probably had the same struggles as I did and still successful and pouring into the lives of women and men , young and old, I didn’t want to be anywhere else !
WHY NOT COME TO A HBCU !
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
Texas Southern University is truly a hidden gem! My university has afforded me so many opportunities like having lunch with Mr. Andrew Young discussing his involvement in the civil rights movement and trips to places I’ve never been before represent the Illustrious Texas Southern University.
On behalf of my university, I was able to go to the State Capitol and lobby to the representatives about providing funding for the betterment of my university. Texas Southern is a family away from home and it truly prepares your for life outside of College . College is what you make it and I made the best of it at Texas Southern University!
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
I had never been to Washington D.C. , Atlanta, or Florida until I came to Texas Southern University and became a student leader especially in Collegiate 100.
Being involved as a student afforded me so many opportunities. Another first would be being President over an organization of over 100 men and women!

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Christina Sanders , political commentator and adjunct professor at Texas Southern University was my political science professor and she wasn’t that much older than held herself with such grace and elegance while teaching a curriculum on the government and Lil Wayne’s lyrics ! She saw so much in me more than I saw in myself !
She poured so much life and wisdom into me and is part of the reason why I am the way I am due to transparency and mentorship.
What is your major? and Why did you choose it?
Clinical Laboratory Science, and I chose it because I was misdiagnosed with severe Urinary Tract Infection when I really had Stage III Ovarian Cancer with an 8lb tumor on my left ovary. Therefore , I decided that once I beat cancer I was going to be apart of the health team that accurately and properly diagnose and treat patients.
How are you positively active on campus? (e.g. clubs, SGA, etc.)
I am the President of Collegiate 100 of Texas Southern University, which is an affliation of 100 Black Men of America . We mentor students from elementary to college while creating programs that implements our pillars : Health and Wellness, Education, Mentoring, and Economic Empowerment.
