1

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*

I am originally from Winston Salem, North Carolina but I currently reside in Atlanta, Georgia.

Throughout my high school career I participated in this college readiness program at Georgia State called Upward Bound Math and Science, and my 10th grade math teacher there was the one who first introduced me to HBCUs.

2

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*

I chose an HBCU over a PWI because I felt that I would grow as an individual better in an environment where there were more people who look like me.

3

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*

Because I am still in high school, I have not yet got the full Tuskegee or HBCU experience. However, every time that I have been on the campus was phenomenal. Ever since my first tour of Tuskegee in the spring semester of my junior year, I knew that this university was where I wanted to continue my education at.

4

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*

My first time experience at my HBCU occurred last spring when I toured Tuskegee for the first time. I remember the day like it was yesterday. It was raining really hard and it was very cloudy. As soon as we got off the bus and went into the chapel, there was something about the school that interested me. All of the teachers and students that we met were so hospitable and friendly.

The only question I asked my tour guide was did they have child psychology. Once she said yes, my fate was sealed. It was at that moment in time that I knew that I would be attending Tuskegee University starting in the fall of 2018.

5

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*

Since I have not yet started class at Tuskegee, I have not had a professor there.

In my opinion though, professors that impact a student's life the most are professors who view their students as individual people and connect with them on a personal level rather than just seem them as another student in their class.

6

What is your major? and Why did you choose it?

My intended major will be Psychology, but I plan on having a concentration in Child Psychology. The reason that I am choosing the major I am is because I enjoy helping children and I feel like in order to help them fully, you must first get them in the proper mindset.

Reaching some sort of mental stability should be the first step when trying to help someone since our minds can be our worst enemies.

7

What factors did you look at to choose the HBCU that was best for you? Why did you feel your HBCU was a good fit for you?

Making sure the college offered my major was the first factor in deciding. The second factor that I looked at was location since I would prefer to stay in the south or at least on the east coast. Since I am a social butterfly, the student population was the third factor. I prefer a medium or large campus size.

My HBCU was definitely a good fit for me because not only does it offer my major, but it is only about 2 1/2 hours from my family and I would consider it a relatively large campus.

8

What made you want to go to college after high school?

What made me want to attend college after high school was the realization that education really does open doors to new opportunities. Both of my parents are first generation college students and I know that they want only the best for me and my little brother, and a college education will definitely get us further in life than ceasing our learning right after high school.

I've always wanted to work with children, and I know that I need to be properly educated in order to do so.

9

How did you study for your college entrance exams? (I.e. SAT, ACT, AP exams, NMSQT, etc.)

I did most of my studying for the standardized test online using Khan academy and other sources given to me by my high school and college teachers.

I've taken SAT and ACT prep classes, and I've been involved in a college readiness program at Georgia State since November of 2014.

10

What activities do you do at home and over the summer in preparation for college?

Things that I have done in preparation for college include working on my study habits as well as my organizational skills. I know that I cannot wait until the last minute and cram for an exam like I have been doing almost all of my high school career.

I actually took a computer class over the summer that was helping me learn the ins and outs of Microsoft word, excel, PowerPoint, etc. because I know that I will be using technology a lot once I actually start college.

11

How did you approach the writing of your college application essay?

The most important approach I took to writing my college application essay was putting a piece of myself within my writing. One of the admissions directors at the University of Chicago told me and other students on our college tour that whatever we are good at doing should be reflected in our essay.

If we are very humorous, throw humor into our essay. If we know a lot of facts, throw facts into our essay. Whatever we need to do to express individuality in our essay is what we should do.

12

What courses are you taking in high school in preparation for college? (Honours, AP, IB, electives, etc.)

I have been dual enrolled at Georgia Piedmont Technical College since the fall semester of my junior year. Almost every class that I have taken is in preparation for college. These include business classes, Psychology classes, and English classes.

The classes that will be most important in continuing my education are the business classes and the psychology classes since I want to start my own child and adolescent psychology practice. All of these classes are equivalent to AP classes.

13

What advice would you give to other high school students thinking about their future?

Some advice I would give students who are thinking about their future is that regardless of where they came from or what kind of situations they have had to go through in the past they can still do something amazing in their life.

As long as they are determined to succeed and allow nothing and no one to stop them from reaching their full potential, there is nothing that they cannot accomplish. Just stay focused and keep their head up.
