Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
Eunice, LA I was introduced to HBCUs by my high school English teacher, Mrs. Emily Rose Alfred.

Alsan J. Bellard, Jr., MD, Grambling State University Class of '92
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I attended a summer program at Grambling for talented high school rising seniors, allowing me to earn 10 college credits. I fell in love with the campus, and I made several good friends during that summer. Many of them returned to Grambling after high school. To this day many of them are good friends of mine.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
My experience was incredible. I gained confidence in my academic and social skills through leadership opportunities on campus and through academic summer programs at other great universities throughout the country. Grambling prepared me for medical school by instilling the confidence I would need to not only succeed but also flourish.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
Pledging--Alpha Phi Alpha
Elections---won both Junior Class President and SGA President
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Dr. Chester Jordan believed in me and encouraged me to apply to medical school. He wrote several letters of recommendation for me and even checked up on me while I was in medical school. He was a great leader.
